COMUNICADO del Museo de Arte Contemporáneo del Zulia 03/08/2017
El Museo de Arte Contemporáneo del Zulia es una de las instituciones más grandes de Latinoamérica y actualmente el primer museo de Venezuela. En la actualidad, es el único museo que a pesar de la grave crisis que enfrenta el país sigue luchando por no cerrar sus puertas. Es una entidad cultural abierta que invita al público visitante a participar y disfrutar de las exposiciones, diversos eventos y actividades que se realizan producto de una programación “hecha a mano”, ofreciendo a la comunidad venezolana una alternativa cultural de alto nivel.
Durante el mes de julio nuestra institución fue impactada por tres hechos delictivos; tres robos en un mismo mes, donde el hampa sustrajo todos los equipos audiovisuales para presentar obras que los requieren, todas las herramientas de trabajo de servicios generales que se utilizan en el montaje de las exposiciones y el camión cava que transportaba los proyectos artísticos a todos los museos y centros culturales del país que lo requirieran.
Cuando fue inaugurado en 1998, su personal superaba las 120 personas; en la actualidad el equipo MACZUL está conformado por 33 personas que trabajan prácticamente Ad Honorem debido a los bajos y esporádicos salarios que perciben, consolidando un personal comprometido con la cultura y que reconoce y difunde el impacto transformador del arte en las sociedades.
Otro aspecto sumamente importante es la deficiencia en materia presupuestaria que se afronta mes a mes para lograr operar con el mínimo mantenimiento físico, aunado a la falla total del servicio de aire acondicionado en todos sus espacios; un problema con el que venimos luchando desde hace casi 2 años intentando su recuperación, pero la tarea se hace casi imposible por las constantes fallas del servicio eléctrico y el robo reciente de piezas de cobre.
Buscamos la ayuda de todo el que pueda colaborar, cuyas contribuciones van destinadas principalmente a:
- Reforzar la seguridad física-técnica del museo.
- Rescatar la operatividad perdida por el robo de nuestras herramientas de trabajo y equipos audiovisuales.
- Hacer reparaciones mayores e importantes del sistema de aire acondicionado.
- Tratamiento y mantenimiento de áreas verdes del museo para adecuarlas, incluyendo iluminación para que estas áreas no representen un escondite del hampa.
A pesar de todas estas necesidades, la pasión y la energía prevalecen en los que formamos parte de este equipo conscientes de superar las contingencias, e igualmente realizando esfuerzos heroicos para prestar el servicio que merecen nuestros visitantes.
El Museo cumple con las funciones de Registro y preservación de la colección, educación y programación expositiva. Es custodio de importantes obras de artistas locales, nacionales e internacionales, y en los últimos años gracias a los aliados y donaciones se han incorporado nuevas obras. Tratamos de mantener una programación expositiva activa, constante y enfocada en artistas contemporáneos regionales, nacionales e internacionales. En el 2016 se inauguraron 55 muestras que generaron un impacto positivo en las cifras de visitas al Museo sobre todo en el espectro nacional. Este año nuestra programación ha tenido que ser nuevamente planificada por los sucesos que se vienen ocurriendo en el país acentuados desde el mes de Abril, para adaptarla a las posibilidades del usuario común a servirse del museo.
El programa educativo y de extensión comunitaria se realiza en estrecha relación con nuestra activa programación expositiva que abarca actividades artísticas y recreativas, así como talleres de capacitación que enriquecen el conocimiento e incrementan la calidad de vida de quienes participan en ellos desarrollando la sensibilidad, creatividad, la identidad cultural y la pluralidad del pensamiento.
No dejemos perder el arte y la cultura, que son motores de la recuperación social de los países. Es vital para la continuidad del trabajo de promoción cultural que asumimos el apoyo de todos, de otra manera el Museo lamentablemente nos vemos en la inminente realidad de un cierre técnico, creando una sombra más a nuestra realidad al cerrar esta plural ventana de promoción cultural de Venezuela.
No permitamos que el Museo cierre sus puertas, tu ayuda es vital sin importar la escala.

The Museum of Contemporary Art of Zulia is one of the largest institutions in Latin America and is currently the first museum in Venezuela. At present, it is the only museum that despite the serious crisis facing the country is still struggling to not close its doors. During the month of July our institution was impacted by three criminal acts; Three robberies in the same month, the criminals removed all audiovisual equipment require to show video art works, all the tools of general services that are used in the assembly of the exhibitions and the vat truck that was used to transport artistic projects to all Museums and cultural centers in the country.
When it was opened in 1998, its personnel exceeded 120 people; nowdays MACZUL team is made up of 33 people who work practically Ad Honorem due to the low salaries they receive, consolidating a staff committed to culture and who recognizes and spreads the transformative impact of art in societies.
Another very important aspect is the deficiency in budgetary matters that is faced month to month to achieve operations with the minimum physical maintenance, together with the total failure of the air conditioning service in all its spaces; a problem that we have been struggling with for almost 2 years trying to recover them, but the task is almost impossible because of the constant failures of electric service in the country and the recent theft of their copper parts.
We seek the help of all who can collaborate to keep the Museum open, whose contributions go mainly to:
• Strengthen the physical and technical security of the museum.
• Rescue the lost everyday processes due to the theft of our working tools and audiovisual equipment.
• Make major and important repairs to the air conditioning system.
• Treatment and maintenance of the green areas of the museum to adapt them, including lighting so that these areas do not represent a hiding place for criminals.
Despite all these needs, passion and energy prevail in which we are part of this team aware of overcoming contingencies, and equally making heroic efforts to provide the service that our visitors deserve.
The Museum fulfills the functions of Registration and preservation of the collection, education and exhibition programming. It is the custodian of important works by local, national and international artists, and in recent years thanks to allies and donations new works have been incorporated. We try to maintain an active, constant and focused exhibition program for contemporary regional, national and international artists. In 2016, 55 shows were opened, which generated a positive impact on the Museum visits, especially within the national spectrum. This year our programming has had to be planned again by events that have been occurring in the country that have accentuated since last April, to adapt it to the possibilities of the usual public of the museum.
The educational and community outreach program is carried out in close relation with our active exhibition program that covers artistic and recreational activities, as well as training workshops that enrich the knowledge and increase the quality of life of those who participate in them, developing sensitivity, creativity, cultural identity and plurality of thought.
Let us not lose art and culture, which are the engines of social recovery of the countries. It is vital for the continuity of the work of cultural promotion that we assume the support of all, otherwise unfortunately we see ourselves in the imminent reality of a technical closure, creating another shadow to our reality when closing this plural window of cultural promotion of Venezuela.
